I don't know Georgianna, so perhaps you have me confused. I remember that as being Dan's default response; it doesn't matter because that was the "joke" part of my response.

Maybe all the hate around here finally got to you? Bitter partisanship is certainly a temptress.

None of this detracts from the fact that you are pretending to know the Bay, generalizing and stereotyping about one of the largest economic engines this country has ever seen. In this, the largest population in the states.

No offense taken. Georgianna wrote long and detailed responses that were very satisfying to all. When she was confronted with a smokescreen she became somewhat more succinct.

I was far more ascerbic and excitable in those days. And I probably was a little direct and offensive in my response to you. I'm sorry.

Rent controls don't work. Anywhere. Not even in the largest economic engine the country has ever seen. Or even the largest state. Economic laws are just that: laws. I don't need to travel to San Francisco to know that if you control rents the supply of available space will dry up. Similarly, when President Obama or President Clinton imposes windfall profits taxes on the evil oil companies, the supply of gasoline will dry up. The lines at the pumps will grow until there are fistfights and riots. If I can sit here in Possum Trot, West Virginia and tell you that why can the drivers of the largest economic engine the country has ever seen not tell you that? Ergo my statement that you folks think you operate beyond the parameters of what is known about the economy. "But we're clever - we have rent controls...say, where are all the black folk?"

Now I have often wondered, in places and/or on specific buildings where they have legislated or enacted "rent controls" on, ........ do/did they also legislate or enact "real estate/property tax controls" on those same properties?

I mean like if the property owner can't increase the rent(s), ...... then surely the county or city shouldn't be permitted to increase the tax assessment on said property, .................. should they?

Was the fair trade coffee watered down this morning or something? Don't appeal to the whole "you're a hater" crap, there, my friend. Dear OhioCounty has more civility in his three teeth (see avatar) than CookCounty has in his whole set of dentures!

Often when a policy is criticized as foolish, like rent-controls (with SamCogar's excellent point about taxes going up just fine) or racially exclusive quotas, names are then called and offense is taken.

I think you need to enjoy yourself here more, OaklandCraig of the Free People's Republic of Yogurt Bars, and laugh a little. We can and should also take each other's positions to task in whatever terms we see fit. We are all friends here. If you do not like an actual free exchange of ideas, then I wonder why the internet is something that you use?

Someone would suggest the gentleman from Ohio County lacks civility or that another woman once regularly went rounds with the boys here. Where is this Georgianna? Sasha is either too busy, or too intelligent to get bogged down in our endless banter. I really wish we had some more ladies.

Stephanie, ........ I'ma thinking she spelled her name Georjanna, ...... anyway, she lives and works somewhere in the Charleston area, or did at the time she was posting to the old Gazette Forums.

Georjanna was not only a super great writer ........ but she knew her "facts" and could cite references "by the dozens" to backup her opinions ..... and tie them all together in a logical sequence of "events".

Her posts were an absolute pleasure for me to read ...... even when I disagreed with her on a couple "social issues", one being pornography. I even told her once that she should be writing "professionally", a weekly Column in the Gazette, a Syndicated Column, something. To paraphrase another, ...... when it came to "putting words on paper", ......... Georjanna had a beautiful mind.

And Steph, you and Georjanna would have been "at odds" in a flash ....... relative to the "Palestinian Situation".

I do not. She was obviously an intelligent woman willing to admit her mistakes. She must have admitted she made a mistake in marrying him (willing to admit fault) and left him (intelligent).
