Science competency ratings of US 8th Grade students
West Virginia's eighth-graders perform worse in science than their peers nationwide, with only 25 percent with a solid grasp of the subject.
According to National Assessment of Educational Progress results released Thursday, 24 percent of public school eighth-graders achieved "proficient" science scores in 2011, compared to 21 percent in 2009. One percent scored at the "advanced" level, unchanged from 2009.
Nationally, 29 percent scored at the proficient level and 2 percent at the advanced level.

Science competency ratings of US 8th Grade students
Inadequate - … WV - 75% ….. Nationally – 69%
Proficient - … WV - 24% ….. Nationally - 29%
Advanced - … WV - 1% ….. Nationally - 2%
These ratings reflect a slight increase in the Proficient level during the past 30+- years which implies that less than 70% of the US population under the age of 40+- years lacks sufficient knowledge and comprehension to make sensible, reasonable and/or logical decisions as to the “truth” or ”falsity” of the various scientific and environmental issues that are presently being “hotly” debated by the citizens.
