Mayans, it is later than you think!

To The Editor:
Recently, the Pope verified the fact that the calendar is off by four years! The year is actually 2016. The proof of the four year error is that the Bible states "that in the days of Caesar Augustus, a decree went forth that all the world should be taxed." But, Caesar Augustus died in 4 B.C.! The rumors of his demise were not exaggerated. (Unfortunately, his desire to tax the whole world lives on with other tax and spend politicians!) If the Mayans were right, then the world ended four years ago--shortly after Obama was elected. Hmmm.
You can blame Dionysius Exiguus for that blunder. He was a 6th century monk who came up with the idea of redefining the year from the birth of Jesus (AD = Anno Domini) instead of the founding of Rome (AUC = Anno Urbis Condita).
This whole fiasco illustrates the dangers of date-setting for the end of the world or the Second Coming of Christ. A radio preacher wrote "81 Reasons Christ Will Come Again in 1981." (The book sold well in 1981 even though at least 81 of those reasons were wrong.) Wasn't it just last year that another radio preacher claimed Christ would return in May? On June 1st, he recalculated it was to be in October. I think he was wrong that time, as well. Did the Mayans mean the world would end 12/21/12 at 12am CST or EST (Daylight Savings Time)? The Jehovah Witnesses have predicted Christ's return at least six times. They claimed Christ would physically and visibly return in 1914 and set up the Kingdom of righteousness and peace-- four years before WWI. In 1915, the claim was changed to say that He came invisibly.
Date setting is like crying "wolf, wolf!" It causes people to ridicule true prophecy. And, secondly, it causes people to procrastinate about salvation.
Anytime someone or some religion sets an exact date for the end of the world or the Second Coming of Christ, then mark that person or religion as a charlatan and a liar. Jesus said, "But of that day and hour knows no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." (Matthew 24:36)
However, the fact remains that Christ is coming again--maybe today, maybe tomorrow, maybe Dec. 21, 2012. The question is not if but when. Are you ready? Matthew 24:44 warms, "Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."
Trust Christ as your own personal Savior today. (Romans 10:9,10,John 3:16) It is later than you--or the Mayans--think!
