U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) was forced to apologize Tuesday to Republican Presidential candidate John McCain for comments he made about McCain’s military service.
“I have profound respect and appreciate his dedication to our country, and I regret my very poor choice of words,” Rockefeller said in a prepared statement.
Rockefeller, who supports Barack Obama for President and has campaigned for him, said in an interview with the Charleston Gazette editorial board this week that McCain was not grounded in issues affecting people because, in part, he was a fighter pilot.
“He flies at 35,000 feet and drops laser-guided bombs, missiles,” Rockefeller said. “He was long gone before they hit. What happened down there, he doesn’t know.” Rockefeller added that he knew the comments were “unkind” because McCain was fighting for the country, but he added, “You sort of have to care what goes on in people’s lives.”
The McCain campaign responded through Lt. Col. Orson Swindle, USMC (retired) who served in Vietnam and spent 20 months in a Hanoi prison with McCain. “We know what flying through hell is like and the senator doesn’t,” Swindle told Metronews. “He probably never heard a shot fired in anger unless it was in the backwoods of West Virginia hunting or something like that.”
Later, Obama’s office issued a statement saying Obama “does not agree with what Senator Rockefeller said.”
It was only a short time after that Rockefeller’s statement of apology was issued. “I have a deep respect for John McCain’s honorable and noble service to our country,” Rockefeller said in the statement. “I made an inaccurate and wrong analogy and I have extended by sincere apology to him.”

Rockefeller is a political jerk, at best- a rich one, but still a jerk.
'Course now, I hear that he speaks Japanese fluently, and that when someone contacts the Japanese about doing business in America that they always ask if Rockefeller supports whatever the enterprise is. So maybe he is a sometimes useful political jerk.

At a ceremony celebrating his $35 million endowment of the University of Chicago. John D. Rockefeller is shown with Dr. Harper the University president. At about the time of this photograph, Rockefeller was being caricatured as the icon for Monopoly, the popular board game.
Later, he was stricken with alopecia, a rare disease that made all his hair fall out. He wore ill-fitting, uncomfortable wigs and was rarely photographed.
He paid exactly $10,000 to the West Virginia Legislature to secure the nomination of Johnson N. Camden to the U. S. Senate. He served without distinction - his only feat was that he managed to stave off the Sherman Antitrust Act for a few years.
His sons and daughters were philanthropists, bankers, one grandson became the un-elected vice-President of the United States, the great-grandson noted in this thread became a United States Senator although he paid much too much for the privilege. None of them amounted to much...

At the university of Chicago, the Rockefeller Chapel is arguably the most beautiful building in the entire city. The Rockefellers also did very nicely by Cleveland, with their influence felt by Severance Hall where the orchestra plays and a phenomenal art museum.
These days, however, John D IV (or is it the 5th?) has instead decided enjoyed a Senate tenure begun when he decided to buy him an election, likely finding WVA one of the easier states in which to do so. I remember when I lived there the Charleston Gazette's fawning over the man, even thanking him for "choosing West Virginia" as the state to represent.
The only thing I can say for Rockefeller is at least he doesn't pretend to be a Republican like Nelson did.

I always wondered why Winthrop failed to use Arkansas the same way, i.e., as a stepping-stone to national prominence. And, just for the record, it is #4.
