School board votes against flex time for maintenance workers
Most Kanawha County school board members don't want to establish flexible work schedules for maintenance staff.
In a 3-2 vote Wednesday afternoon, board members Becky Jordon, Jim Crawford and Barbara Welch voted in favor of maintenance staff who did not want to open up the daily work schedule - and against Superintendent Ron Duerring's motion.
About 30 county maintenance workers attended the meeting and several spoke out, board members said.
"I listened to what everybody had to say," Crawford said. "I just felt like that was the right thing to do. The reason they didn't want to go to flex time is they still wanted to have family time.
Board member Pete Thaw said more schedules throughout the workday, such as late shifts, would cut back on staff overtime. Thaw said county officials wanted to start the shifts on a voluntary basis.
"I supported it because I can't believe we have to be different from any large company or corporation," Thaw said. He said that coal mines, hospitals and many other private corporations have different work shifts.
"They care about what they do and they had reasons why they didn't want [flexible schedules]," Jordon said of the workers.
Bill Raglin, who voted with Thaw in favor of the policy, said he had tried to open up the work schedule twice before in the last eight or nine years.
"I just don't think it makes any sense to paint classrooms inside ... when the children are in there," he said. "It can be done in the off hours."
Raglin said he was not especially worried about overtime.
"I thought it was in the best interest of the system, the kids," he said. "I'm very disappointed. I'm not criticizing any of the other board members. I just thought it was a non-debatable issue."
Crawford said the county saves money when officials allow overtime as opposed to hiring contractors for maintenance work.

Do those Board Members and county maintenance workers really think everyone is so stupid that they will actually believe that the maintenance workers don’t want that “flexible schedule” imposed upon them because …… “they still wanted to have family time”?
GIMME A BREAK
A “flexible schedule” means that everyone will only have to be “at work” 8 hours a day and will only be paid for 8 hours per day ….. and will have 16 hours per day to have their “family time”.
A “non-flexible schedule” means that everyone will have to be “at work” 8 hours a day …… away from their “family time”, ……… PLUS those hundreds of hours of logged “overtime” away from their “family time”, …….. which means hundreds of hours of LOST “family time”.
YUP, no “flex time” …. means hundreds of hours of logged “overtime” …… and they don’t want to lo$e that.
All School Systems have a “2nd or evening shift” for custodians/janitors for doing things that can’t be or shouldn't be done when students are present ………. so “why not” have a “2nd or evening shift” for county maintenance workers for doing things that should only be done when students are not present.
“Why not”, …… probably because those Public Employee prima donnas only want to “work” ….. when they want to “work”, …….. and them and their Managers and/or Supervisors could care less about doing the “work” when the ”work” should actually be “worked on”.
“Why not”, …… because it is not for the best interest of the kids, ..... it is for the best intere$t$ of the employees.
