DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
By LYNN ELBER
Ellen better hope that Portia doesn't make a movie with Harrison Ford--like Ann Heche did--and gets straightened out! (Seven Days Six Nights)
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ellen DeGeneres is putting the California Supreme Court ruling in favor of gay marriage into action - she and Portia de Rossi plan to wed, DeGeneres announced during a taping of her talk show.

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
I would really like to know what is going to change for them after their "legal" wedding.
I dare say that if the opinion of the state gives their relationship meaning, then it is a sad relationship.

That depends on what legal rights and privilages gays had before this decision. When Rosie was sued for the magazine thing, her partner was legally compelled to testify about private, intimate conversations (I don't remember if the acutally forced her or what she said) that you're wife could not be forced to testify about in a court of law.
Social Security, health care, stuff of that nature that she would now be entitled to.

I'm not sure she'll be entitled to survivor SS benefits. You're forgetting DOMA.

And would you say the same about your or my marriage to our partners- that it must have been a sad relationship if getting the blessing of the state gave it meaning?

So, presuming that you and your spouse are legally married, why did you become legally married? But if you aren't "legally married", that's OK with me too.

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
Ziggy,
You might be aware of the unfortunate reality of common law marriage, which in 1999 existed in the state of Illinois (it no longer does, to my knowledge). Even if I married my wife in the church and not told the state, the state would have decided for me that it wanted to recognize my marriage.
The state invited itself to our wedding, we did not invite it.

I am responsible to God and to my wife, and to no one else, as to how I conduct myself in my marriage.

Mike, that all depends on how good a pre-nup that dominate lezzy has.
If those two splits split ...... the "wifey" may be able to claim "rights" back before they were married and Ellen just might hafta "pay" for long time services rendered.

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
True enough, Sam. I'm told that in Canada the "gay divorce" business is now in full swing.
How long does the average Hollywood marriage last? I think it will be very curious indeed to see what people will think of gay marriage when they are paying gay alimony. If straight people can't seem to stay married, what gives the gays the idea that somehow the institution will flourish in their hands?

Just like Ellen DeGeneres is responsible to her God and her spouse, and to no one else, right?

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
Ziggy,
You do not get to invent God in your own image, because the God that actually exists will have something to say about it. SheikBen and Ziggy exist despite the likelihood that others think us to be who we are not (and as such do not really know us at all).
As far as the state goes, however, it should have no say one way or the other over what Ellen and mr/mrs Ellen do. But you and others do want the state in your bedrooms, you just want them there "your way," including gays but not polygamists or animal lovers.
I do not want my marriage to have any legal treatment above any other two people. If my wife gets survivors benefits, it should be fine for anyone else (whether engaging in sex or not) to designate a survivor, if they have no children. There should be a way for hospital rights and inheritance rights as well aside from the marriage issue. As far as taxes go, my wife and I were in the marriage penalty in 1999 and 2000, so it was not as if the state was doing anything for us in that regard.

Why not? We can, and do, invent our Gods in any and all images we care to.

Yes, obviously both my and your God have something to say about it. And I am rather certain that Ellen Degenres' God has something to say about it too- at least to her, even if not to you and me..

What makes you think so, Mike? I don't care what anyone else does in their bedroom, including polygamists and animal lovers- as well as gays. It's none of my, nor the state's business. Live and let live.

Why "aside from the marriage issue"? All that, and more, is what marriage is about.

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
Animal lovers???? You've spent wayy too much time up on the farm, Ziggy. lol
Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
I have a very live and let live attitude about this subject. I think that it is very unfair when their partner can not visit them in the hospital and make medical decisions when necessary. In some places a family member will receive their belongings after a gay person has died. A family member inherits everything who has not accepted them or spoken with them or had anything to do with them for years. While the person who has been part of their life is left out. It is not fair. Almost everyone I know lives in Mass. and as big as an uproar that their was from what I have been told nothing has fallen apart. The state did not enter into chaos because gay marriage was legalized. No one really even talks about it. Most people I know also do not want to put discrimination into the state Constitution either. (some people want to) It doesn't seem that it would get by the voters now. I think that we might be surprised one day when we die and go to heaven at who is there with us. Not evil people but maybe people that we thought of as different from us, weren't so different from God's image of what he made and said that it was good.

Stephanie, did anyone tell you about the time one holiday season night, maybe 4 or 5 years ago in Charleston, when some guy was caught getting "up close and personal" with a sheep at the live manger scene on the west side of town? It was the "talk of the town"- so much so that the Gazette's servers crashed with all the hits to its website seeking info. on the story.
Only in West Virginia- and maybe Arkansas.

Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
No Ziggy I've heard a couple like that in other places too. When I was young people used to talk about a farm in the boondocks of Mass. My father used to get mad if he caught anyone talking about it while us kids were still awake. It seems like it is something that happens and people whisper about.

A man accused of having sex with a sheep used in a Charleston nativity scene has struck a deal with Kanawha County prosecutors that allowed him to stay out of jail.

Back in Rhode I we became friends with this trucker named Eric. Eric was a moutain of an Italian. When he learned Loyd was from WV he called him a "sheep f_______er! lol Now many people find my husband to be sort of intimidating, and I think even Eric the Mountain was concerned about offending him because he paused about 3 seconds and said, "It's all good. I'm Italian...........my people ____ chickens."
So, I'm just not all that surprised the animal in question was a sheep. Eric got it right.
Re: DeGenerets plans to wed gal-pal
Well, Ziggy......that was a very sad story. I frequently find things that on the surface seem amusing are actually rather tragic.

Amusing huh, ........ yo want AMUSING do ya.
Do you know why some sheep farmers wear those big ole gum boots that come half way up the calf of their legs?
Ewe can't run away if feet are in them.
And sad and TRAGIC, just say so.
Do ya know why the buck sheep fell off the rock cliff and kilt himself?
Duh, he didn't see the ewe turn.
