Eleven citizen and environmental groups in West Virginia and Maryland have filed a 60-day notice about their intent to sue a wind power project.

They say the huge turbines from the NedPower Mount Storm project would kill endangered bats and squirrels geek geek near the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area.

The groups also will sue corporate owners Dominion Resources and Shell Wind Energy for violating the Endangered Species Act, according to Judy Rodd, director of Friends of Blackwater Canyon, based in Charleston.

Rodd said wind power companies are ignoring the "huge number of birds and bats that will be killed each year by the project," including eagles that will be "decapitated geek as they try to return to their winter homes near Mount Storm Lake."

Threatened species include the West Virginia northern flying squirrel, geek Indiana bat and Virginia big-eared bat.

In their 60-day notice, the 11 groups ask NedPower to provide them with a formal Habitat Conservation Plan evaluating and predicting threats to endangered species.

The groups also sent letters expressing their concerns to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the West Virginia Public Service Commission about threats to bald eagles, golden eagles and other migrating birds protected by existing federal legislation.

Why can't they make those turbines so that bat's and birds can't get into them? It's not like putting a screen around a fan is an unheard of technology.

Do you have any idea the diameter of the blade swept area of the wind turbines at Mt. Storm on the Allegheny Front in Tucker and Grant counties?

A "screen" that big would be so massive as to effectively block most of the wind that would otherwise strike and push those blades.

You're trying to tell me in todays technoligical age, where we make computers smaller then the palm of your hand, planes invisible and will send a man to Mars, that we can't cover a turbine, even if it is 300 feet wide.

Horse pucky Frank.

It's not that they can't. It's the added cost of adding and supporting the mesh, that WOULD NOT block the wind, required to cover the turbines.

Now folks, there are more birds and squirrels killed every week by automobiles than will be killed by wind turbine blades in ten years.

Now if anyone wishes to see the scene of a continual "squirrel massacre", ...... just take a drive over to Washington, DC, ...... and take that 4-laner with the high cement walls on either side ......... in toward center city.

That roadway is literly polluted with dead and decaying squirrel corpses.

So why aren't the enviros saying something about that? geek lol!

Because theirs are the cars that are doing the killing.

I'm really ahcked off at these people--we can't have wind, we can't use oil, we can't use coal, we can't use nuclear. Let them go Amish and see how they like it, and then they can tell me that wind power is unreasonable.

I agree Mike. Let them go without power for a year and see how they like having no power.
