According to Robert Novak, Charlie Rangel, the new Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has parlayed his position of leadership with the most ethical Congress ever into the largest campaign war chest ever. In the first three quarters of this year he has netted $2.7 million. His immediate predecessor, Bill Thomas took in $3.8 million over his six year tenure. His immediate predecessor, Bill Archer raised less than $1 million over his six year chairmanship.

Rangel's donors include (but are not limited to): Citigroup, MetLife, and JPMorgan Chase. And here you thought there was a new sheriff in town. Turns out there's a new corporate cash hog in town. Does this mean he will oppose Peruvian social security reform? At least somebody in the new majority is getting something done.

$2.7 million in 9 months? That's chicken feed.

Heck, Ron Paul takes in more than that in one day sometimes- and more than double that on at least one day.

Ah, but Congressman Paul isn't taking donations from the likes of Citigroup and JP Morgan. The average donation made by a Ron Paul supporter is slightly higher than $100 and tens of thousands of private individuals made contributions totaling $6.04 million in a single day.
