Map of California's Oil Rigs
http://www.sfgate.com/maps/oil/
Platform A
This oil platform was the site of one of the oil industry's biggest environmental disasters. A 1969 blowout at this rig spewed crude oil into the sea, coating or contaminating 30 miles of shoreline. The spill helped forge the modern environmental movement and led to state and federal moratoriums on new offshore drilling.
I'm just sayin'

Well Craig I thought Aaron said that could never happen?
Maybe he meant nowadays with state of the art high technology?

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
Wouldn't you both agree major technological and safety advances have been made in the 39 years since?
Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
Sure, Craig, you can point to the Exxon Valdez or the 1969 disaster of Three Mile Island or the Sago Coal Mine disaster or what have you. Eventually one of those wind turbines is going to fall on someone.
Shiitake mushrooms happen, Craig.

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
I was illustrating that we already have tons of rigs immediately off the coast. And it is still an accident waiting to happen.

Everything is an accident waiting to happen. I am an accident waiting to happen. I am an accident already having happened to my wife.
Seriously, Craig, anything can go wrong. Shall we outlaw the Germans?

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
More oil seeps from the bottom of the sea then is spilled off of oil rigs. It's a scare tatic used to discourage drilling, just like in ANWR and is imo, a primary reason we are paying the energy prices we are.

Craig, why in hell are you so damn worried about an oil spill off the California coast killing a few birds or animals .......... and not the least damn bit concerned about earthquakes in California killing thousands of people and causing billions in damage?
I would think you should be railing against any more socio-economic development of any kind in the State of California ....... rather than railing against any more off-shore development of the oil and gas industry.
It seems the lefty whackos are always more concerned with the potential deaths of a few birds and/or animals ......... than they are about the potential deaths of TENS OF THOUSANDS of humans.
Such fruitcakes should be committed to an asylum or deported to an island where they can live what they preach.

Well Sam if a major earthquake would occur dont you believe oil rigs would be at risk?
And if the coast of California is devastated it will affect more than just wildlife.

You really are silly, Sherman.
If a major earthquake would occur, ........ do you think the average resident in California would really give a damn what happened to any of those oil rigs?

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
California is the main engine for much of this country. We are the top producers of agriculture, and are even the top cheese/dairy producers.
The waters off our coast also provide sea food.
Now are you saying, that the nation should abandon California? Or maybe start respecting us more?

Sorry, Craig, y'all ran out of power a few years ago.

No, I'm saying California should be carrying its weight in energy production. As a top producer of agriculture and home of the entertainment industry and one of our most populous states, your state and her residents are among the top consumers of energy in this nation. There are abundant oil reserves off the coast, in the ocean which California does not "own".
California needs to stop blocking the rest of the country from offshore drilling before foreign nations are drilling for oil 80 miles off California's coast just like the Chinese are off the coast of Florida. Those are international waters and it would be far more beneficial to America, especially Californians, if America is doing the drilling.
If Californians are unwilling to do their share in lessing American dependancy on foreign oil, making America safer and more competitive economically, perhaps California should seek to secede. At least with Secession we'd be rid of the likes of Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstien, & Co. I firmly believe the rest of us would be far better off.

Even with its massive agricultural industry, California consumes less oil per person than do 40 other states.

Californians have more mass transit, drive more fuel efficient vehicles, and have a conservation ethic that should make all America jealous to the point of emulating it. But instead somehow you'd rather California secede. Siggghhh....................................

Then California is the perfect example of why Americans should be drilling for more oil and and building nuclear power plants. Even with all of their conservation, by volumn, they use more energy then all but a few states.

Not at all. I would much rather have California make up the 18.172 barrel per capita difference between production and consumption. Make no mistake about it, California is every bit as dependent on foreign energy as the rest of America.
They have more mass transit because they have more areas with high population density making mass transit affordable and desirable. They drive more fuel efficient vehicles than other states because they fouled the air so badly in prior decades they were suffocating over there.
The actions of a California elected official have jeopardized the economy and the security of all of America. Yeah, I'm a bit annoyed.
Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
A friend of mine worked for the public transportation system in Los Angeles. His boss drove a hummer to work.
I think it's great that many of the western cities have good public transit systems. It's one of the few things the government has gotten right.

Well Zigster, that was an awful purty list with its percentages and Bar Graphs and all ......... but I did not see anywhere ........ what they used as their input data and/or how they arrived at their results.
Therefore, neither you nor I have any frigging idea in the world what the meaning of those "sequenced totals" are meant to define.
cheers

We have Nuclear Power already. I believe California has 5 or 6 total. http://www.energy.ca.gov/nuclear/california.html
You'll notice that the majority are in Liberal Northern California. Appears the Conservatives must be the NIMBYs after all.
I don't see WV as being on the list. http://www.eia.doe.gov/cneaf/nuclear/page/at_a_glance/reactors/states.html
Maybe you should start with a plant in your state?
California Utilities use Natural Gas vehicles, and our incentive programs have really increased Hybrid vehicle purchases.

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
Craig,
That's all very impressive but it does not alter the fact that on a per capita basis California residents are still consuming in excess of 18 barrels of oil a year more than the state is producing. It is an outrage that one elected official, representing only a fraction of the nation's population, is interfering with the will of the majority of Americans. I have a news flash for you......California is not the only state with a coastline and an ever growing number of Californians favor off-shore drilling.
Environmentalists find excuses to block the construction of everything, including renewable sources of energy like wind farms in WV & MA and while you may feel very comfortable living in close proximity to a nuclear power plant many in this part of the country have irrational fear of radiation thanks to Three Mile Island and Chernobyl. These incidents are not anywhere near as long ago as the 1969 oil rig disaster that radical environmentalists use as an excuse to block oil drilling off the coast of our shores.
The increase in the price of oil doesn't hurt the affluent and the powerful the way it does the working poor and middle class. Pelosi & Co. should be ashamed of themselves, and if you support this, so should you.

Re: Map of California's Oil Rigs
My point is that we do plenty. (And I'd add that WV certainly sacrifices plenty for the good of the entire country).
We are not the NIMBYs that the media et al. would have you believe. In fact, there's much about California the nation does not understand.
You want me to start a California thread or do you want to create a Main topic? I don't mind giving you my take on these things there.
