Re: And again, speaking of ethics ..............
Steph: If a woman doesn't want to have a baby, she should have intercourse.
I assume you meant "shouldn't. Tell that to the rapist. Tell that to the woman that got slipped a rufie. Tell that to the broken condom.
Aaron: No it's not. Selective Service is still registering males 18 to 25 if needed for a national draft. You're mistaken.
My error. I never kept up with the last amendments. I mistakenly though that there was one to get rid of the draft.
I know there are good arguments as to why it [the draft] should be unconstitutional.
There will likely never be another draft, anyhow, so the question is moot. War just isn't as labor-intensive, these days.
Anyway, slavery was found to be unconstitutional. My argument wasn't all based in error.
Steph: Last year I had a problem with wood roaches. I had never even heard of them before. It was pretty wet. This year as soon as the rain started I retreated all the areas I treated last year with this stuff that's supposed to act as a barrier. Knock on wood, I haven't seen any of those nasty bastards this year. I was absolutely freaked out because initially I thought they were whatever the other kind are called. Nope, as soon as it dried up a bit they were gone.
Don't pile wood up against the house, don't use organic mulch near the foundation and keep tall trees and shrubs back from the house a bit. Not only do such things trap moisture and mold against the house, it provides the perfect environment for sawbugs, wood roaches, millipedes, black widows, camel crickets...

Re: And again, speaking of ethics ..............
Terry,
You can't make the case for abortion on demand because a statitistically small number of women will become pregnant as the result of rape. That isn't an excuse for women like my former sister-in-law who use, or have used, abortion as a method of birth control. That woman had 3 abortions that I know of between the ages of 19 and 21. I've no doubt there were others. Rape victims now have the morning after pill available to them, OTC even.
We pulled the only shrub and the one tree that were growing up against the side of the house early this spring. Perhaps that's why those roaches didn't return.
I am already seeing fewer ants after using the bleach solution yesterday. In the living room, I used it on the nonwood hard surfaces, which aren't many, but it did seem to help already. Thanks for the advice.

I would make the case if it was only one rape victim. Also, I KNOW that birth control doesn't always work.
Also, what if you can't get to the pharmacist or the rapist is a family member and won't let you go or take you?
Yes some people will abuse it. That doesn't change a thing. Some people are unfit parents. I wouldn't suggest banning having kids for everyone.

Also, while rape victims getting abortions may be statistically small let me give you the last figures I saw - a rape happens in the US every seven minutes, on average.

Re: And again, speaking of ethics ..............
True and sad, Terry, but also irrelevant to elective abortion.
Most any hospital has a rape kit that will prevent pregnancy. Yes there will always be an exceedingly rare "test case" in which a rape victim does not go to the hospital AND is pregnant, and sad though that is, it does not justify the taking of innocent human life that was created by elective sex.
Exactly what part of a woman's body is the fetus? Is it her arm? The fetus has two arms. Her belly? The fetus has one of those, too.

parasite - an animal or plant that lives in or on a host (another animal or plant); it obtains nourishment from the host without benefiting or killing the host

I'm sure the children of those of you who considered them parasites prior to their birth are just tickled pink their mothers' didn't share your twisted view.

The actual statastic is 0.3% 3 tens of one percent. That is the percentage of abortions performed because of rape. That statastic comes from the Alan Guttmacher Institute and state health statistic agencies.

I never said that ALL rape victims get pregnant or get abortions, now did I.

Re: And again, speaking of ethics ..............
You're using a tiny fraction of abortions as an excuse for hundreds of thousands of abortions each year.

Not that I don't trust your numbers but I would support it even if it was only the cause of one abortion per year.
Unless all men are going to put their sperm on ice and get vasectomies, women have to live with the possibility of a forced or unwanted pregnancy.
I'm sorry it is abused by many but freedom frequently comes with a price.

Re: And again, speaking of ethics ..............
Terry, they aren't "my" numbers. They're government statistics.
With freedom comes responsibility. People want sexual freedom. They don't want to be constrained by the morality of their parents or a religion. The Puritans went the way of the dinosaur long ago. But having the freedom to have sex outside of marriage or with mulitple partners comes the risk of unintended pregnancy.
If a woman isn't willing to carry a pregnancy to term, she shouldn't have intercourse. The numbers I found on abortion are from 2000 and came from the Guttmacher Institute. Less than 1% from 9 years ago would certainly be reduced now that the morning after pill is readily available OTC from sea to shining sea.
