Super Delegates=Democrats in BIG trouble
Right now, Feb. 9, 2008, Hillary has 840 pledged delegates to Obama's 831. Mathematically, there is no way either can get to the 2,025 delegates needed to win the nomination before the convention. That means the 796 super delegates are going to decide who the Democratic nominee for President will be.
So what happens if one candidate wins the popular vote but is not selected or the leader of pledged delegates is overruled by super delegates??? This has the potential to get REALLY messy for the Democratic party and doesn't bode well for them.
I can see a scenario where democrats are so disenfranchised that they don't come out in November to support who their party picks as the nominee and republicans retain the White House AND wins back the Congress.

Democrats will NOT let this happen because they believe the one who receives the most popular votes should be elected--not selected by some electoral college. Don't worry, Aaron. Democrats are too principled to let this decision be by any other means than the popular vote.

Re: Super Delegates=Democrats in BIG trouble
Well guys it will not and cannot be by popular vote in either party.
Being as both parties have several states that use other methods to choose delegates to the conventions.
Just look at wv and the methods used by the republicans here.
I doubt there is anyone on this forum who understands it completely.
But with some states using primaries and some states using other methods, there is no justice in just going by the popular vote.
That would disenfranchise a heck of a bunch of voters.

Re: Super Delegates=Democrats in BIG trouble
What is you people going to do sherm is Obama has the majority of the popular vote, the majority of the states and the majority of the pledged delegates but Hillary takes a majority of the Super delegates and wins the nomination?
And do you know what a super delegate is?
And for the record, I understood exactly what happened last week with the Republicans. Don't you???

Re: Super Delegates=Democrats in BIG trouble
I understand what they did at the convention, but do not understand how they choose the other delegates.
And I doubt if Huckabee will win the primary here.
But I could be wrong about that.

Re: Super Delegates=Democrats in BIG trouble
You would be wrong. Huck has already won 18 of 30 delegates. 3 are super delegates and they support whom ever they choose and the other 9 will be decided by voters in May.
And when the Republican convention convenes in September, Sen. McCain will have enough pledged delegates to gain the Republican nomination and will not have to rely on Super delegates, hence Republicans are getting the man the people voted for.
democrats, on the other hand, are going to have their nominee decided by party leadership.
We'll see how that works out for you if half the voters, pissed at the outcome of the convention, stay home in November.
