Snow cleanup costly

Manchin said aid to cover expense of weather should be federal money

Gov. Joe Manchin guarantees West Virginia communities reeling from the cleanup costs of a long series of snowfalls will get financial relief.

However, he says he would rather give the federal government a chance to foot the bill than dip into state reserves.

Explain to me why the Federal Government should be expected pay for the clean up of snow. West Virginia pays one of the highest gasoline tax rates in the nation. It would seem to me that we should have the money to cleanup after a major snow.

I had to travel to Maryland on Monday. In Mineral and Hampshire Counties the roads were a mess. The were covered with slush. As soon as I hit the Maryland line on US 220, the roads were plowed dry, and even the sides of the road had been plowed.

Seems to me that the real problem here isn't the need for more money, its mismanagment.

And/or maybe the number of residents (taxpayers) per mile of highway to maintain has something do do with it.

Maryland: population- 5,633,597 / 31098 road miles= 181 residents per road mile

WV: population- 1,814,468 / 37053 road miles= 49 residents per road mile

Oh your numbers are lovely and meaningless. Maryland is in the middle of a massive budget crisis, West Virginia isn't in nearly as bad a shape.
