What it is?

I think Jeremiah Wright is a buffoon, but I must admit I've heard his sermons before and like to listen to them. He will sometimes say things (and his church does a lot of things) that are actually worthwhile.

I also think that his statements, if ever uttered by a white man, would surely condemn anyone who was ever within earshot, let alone a member of over 20 years. So while I do not think that Wright is as bad as people are making him out to be, I also see a substantial level of hypocrisy here in that he gets away with rhetoric that would never fly elsewhere.

I seem to remember someone else stating that 9/11 was our fault and linking it with the repression of a group. What was that dude's name...

... oh, yeah - Falwell.

Substitute "queers and liberals" for "whitey" and "christians" for "blacks" and the rants are amazingly similar.

What is not similar was that ol' Jerry was religious adviser (something for which there should be no formal position in the Federal Government, appointed or otherwise) to at least one president (Regan).

Don't think that white preachers don't get away with this sort of thing, also.

And I say, "There is no difference between most all Politicians, other Preachers and a Rev. Wright."

They all "preach" what their audience wants to hear.

They are all Elmer Gantry'ies of a different name.

Elmer Gantry is a satirical novel written by Sinclair Lewis in 1926 and published by Harcourt in March 1927.

The novel tells the story of a young, narcissistic, womanizing college athlete who, upon realizing the power, prestige, and easy money that being an evangelical preacher can bring, pursues his "religious" ambitions with relish, contributing to the downfall, even death, of key people around him as the years pass. Gantry continues to womanize, is often exposed as a fraud, and frequently faces a complete downfall, yet he is never fully discredited and always manages to emerge triumphant and reaching ever greater heights of social standing. The novel ends as the Rev. Gantry prays for the USA to be a "moral nation" and simultaneously admires the legs of a new choir singer.
