WV students need a Law like this, …. right?
Teen mothers-to-be attending a Denver high school are asking for at least four weeks maternity leave, saying they don't want to be penalized for absences while healing and bonding with their new babies, The Denver Post reports.
The current policy at East High School requires new mothers to return to school the day after they are discharged from the hospital or be penalized for unexcused absences, the paper said.

WV already has one - as long as a dr. writes a note excusing the absences (for whatever reason - maternity, surgery, 2 broken legs....) then the child can return at the end of that time with the right to all assignments/tests/projects to be able to be completed and turned in for full-credit.
Schools do not have the right to withhold or penalize a students' education due to medical reasons.

But if a student doesn' make good grades ...... they are not permitted to play sports.
And if one quits before graduating ....... they can't get a Driver's License until they are 18.
I guess a student's "personal responsibilities" ......... are "selectively personal".

Sam,
Would you rather they drop out and not receive a diploma?

Right. And if they don't make good grades, or if they quit before graduating, then don't let 'em get pregnant. Hell, don't even let 'em even take part in sexual activities. That'll teach 'em responsibility.

HA, ..... and if they are bored at school would you rather the girls get pregnant so they could get 4 weeks off to "bond" with their new born?
And if the "father" is also a student, ...... shouldn't he also get 4 weeks off to "bond" with the child?
Anyway, in all seriousness, just how much good is that HS Diploma going to do for them if they "got a child to raise"?
Maybe Zigster will have a "good answer" to that question.

Certainly a HS diploma gives them better prospects for the future. HS graduates earn more than drop-outs. Not every situation is the same. In many cases these girls have families willing to help them so they can continue their educations and go on to college or trade school etc. For those who don't that diploma is really important.
If you're going to exclude teenage girls from school for having babies, are you also going to exclude teenage boys from school for becoming fathers?

As long as the schoolwork is sent home with the student and completed, I don't see any problem.
If it is four months of no work, I'd say the grade should be repeated. Most people can't play that sort of extreme "catch up".
