SCOTUS Says Americans Have Right to Own Guns!

Actually I read somewhere on one of the blog sites that Alito was his first choice but since O'Connor was retiring, he was getting pressure to fill that position with another woman. So it turns out his 'second choice' wasn't a bad one after all, huh!!!

I agree that Alito was not a bad choice. But he wasn't Bush's first choice.

What is the likelihood of a Democratic appointee later going against Democratic wishes, just as Souter and Stevens are Republican appointees that vote with the liberals on the court?

I wish our judiciary were independent, but the Democrats in the Senate's insistence on appointees being pro-choice proves that they, at least, want their policies in the judiciary. They claim they want an independent judiciary as long as it agrees with them. I'm not sure how to get a truly independent judiciary, but it is a myth that the Democrats want one.

Funny how Republican presidents have a "better" record of appointing judges from across the ideological spectrum. Can anyone remember the last time a Democrat appointed a justice who wasn't entirely beholden to the ACLU and the People for the American Way?

I think Byron White (sp?), Kennedy's pick, was the last one, and I don't reckon I'll ever see one again. I'd love to be surprised, though.
