Would you prefer he just bomb Iran to smithereens?
We talked with North Korea.....but we won't talk with Iran.

Re: Obama: 'I'd still talk with Ahmadinejad'
I heard the other day that former drug lords are helping us in Afghanistan. They're not good people but have "made progress". It dawned on me that this debate is kind of like the "mommy versus strict father" analogy. Bush and company have pursued the strict father path; turning a cold shoulder towards anyone who disagrees with them.
It makes more sense to me to talk to those we disagree with, and tell them where they are improving, and criticizing them where applicable.
If we were to talk to Iran we can say here is the offer. It won't get better; the next offer will be worse, the one after that even worse.
My advice is that you take the current offer (whatever that may be)

It truly upsets me that so many view all those human beings as expendable. Surely there is a better way.

Negotiating with Iran is the least bad of a series of bad options. Bush seems to recognize this, and is greasing the skids for a more robust diplomatic effort when Obama takes over. But I think we'll quickly find that Iran is not interested in talking about its nuclear program. Iraq, yes; Afghanistan, yes, but not the nuclear program. We should call their bluff.
