Bush economy strikes California
http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/politics/2008/07/25/california-voters-report-unprecedented-economic-pain.html
Of course 50 years from now the revisionist republicans will deny there was ever a Bush recession.
They will say partisans like ol Sherm just made it up...

And you have the numbers on your side to back up what your saying, right Sherm???
So let's see them.
And maybe we can have some of that meaningful debate you crave so much.

Re: Bush economy strikes California
It's good to know our dependency on foreign oil is hurting those who are seeking to prevent the rest of the nation from utilizing every currently available means to end that dependency are hurting just like the rest of us.
Re: Bush economy strikes California
Again, I think this is important because although California seems like its own country, our pain is your pain.
Since we pay more than our share of everything, it means the country is impacted even more than our population of 37 million or so.
Similarly, we have lost more citizens than any state in the Iraq debacle.

Re: Bush economy strikes California
You pay more than your fair share because of government intrusion. When planning became fashionable in California it removed over 2/3 of the available land. Land zoomed in value. You were shocked! Shocked, I say.
IT was called "smart" planning or some other euphemism. It was expensive government intrusion and that was only the beginning.

Explain? We pay more Federal taxes why? We contribute more military casualties why? We provide more food why?
We're like the most productive members of a family. Other states are like the lazy sibling. Why are we in your cross hairs?

California began zoning and planning in the 1970's. Today the African-American population in San Francisco has fallen from 13% of the population to a little over 6%. In real numbers that was 90,000+ to around 47,000. You have made real estate so expensive that only the effete can afford to live there. Is planning some kind of code for racial bias?

I'm sure Jimmy will be happy to explain himself to you. As for your questions, they have very simple answers. California is the third largest state by land area and the most populous state in the nation. California's geography provides lots of terrific farmland.

I suggest you reread the portion of your statement highlighted in red. After thinking about it, you may get a little insight into why you, and many other Californians, rub me the wrong way.
California uses it's large population and political clout to try to ram things down the throat of the rest of the nation, like blocking off-shore drilling in federal waters because of the irrational fears of Californians. Californians also have this annoying tendency to fail to take a good long look in the mirror and consider how they really aren't that much better than any place else.
For example, for all of California's economic prosperity, the San Joaquim Valley is one of the most economically depressed regions of the entire country and the state is projected to have a $16 billion budget deficit, despite having the 9th largest GDP in the WORLD.
These are problems California faces brought on largely by....you guessed it, Californians. Yet Californians seem insistant on blaming the rest of the nation and demanding that the other 49 states take on whatever measures will cure California of her ills.
Hubris is the word that comes to mind.

Are there offshore drillings on the coast Of Rhode Island?

Not to my knowledge, but I wouldn't be opposed to it if they found oil out there.
Re: Bush economy strikes California
And I would not object to them drilling off the shore of WV.
But I do object to strip mining, especially mtr.

I object to MTR & strip mining too. I did when I lived in RI.
I also supported off-shore drilling when I lived in the Ocean State.
I would not support drilling in Block Island Sound, or in Narragansett Bay......but out in the open ocean, you bet.

Re: Bush economy strikes California
I think Craig's point is that it should be up to Californians. A majority of them presently support offshore drilling.

Re: Bush economy strikes California
I heard one report that the biggest objectors are primarily rich republicans who own the oceanfront property.
But that one was about Florida.
I dont know if that holds true in California or not.
(I have a son who lives right on the beach in SF and he definitely is not a republican.)

Republicans don't live on the beach - it's too far from work.

And Democrats don't usually own oceanfront property.
They rent it from rich republicans.

If so I bet a dollar to a donut she is opposed to offshore drilling.
