Public benefits must change

Courts can't order cities to pay more than taxpayers can afford to pay
Active employees of the city of Huntington now pay only $12 a month for individual health insurance coverage, and $15 a month for family coverage.

Naturally, this has imposed high costs on- the people on the other end of the equation - taxpayers.

The cost of health insurance and police and fire-fighter pensions is expected to account for 41 percent of the city of Huntington's $38.5 budget this year, reports the Herald-Dispatch of Huntington. Personnel costs make up 72 percent of the budget, leaving less than $11 million for public services.

$15.8 MILLION - yearly cost of health insurance and police and fire-fighter pensions

$27.7 MILLION - total yearly personnel cost

$11 MILLION - total yearly amount to keep the city's infrastructure in good shape

Ya gotta keep the trough full for all the troughfeeders because they are really important in insuring that WV stays in the shape that its in, been in forever.
