Now Atheists Want to Join In Christmas Displays

One sign reads, "Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds." Well, the same could be said about Global Warming: Global Warming is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds--but no one is asking to place a sign at Christmas displays. I think it is laughable that atheists spend so much time trying to disprove the existence of God. But, I am glad that they are irritated by Christmas displays--it's icing on the cake, bm'd.

As we have noted before, atheism is a religion of its own. After numerous attacks on Christian displays during the National Holiday celebrating the birth of Christ, and numerous lawsuits attempting to ban that expression....I guess some are embracing the moto "if you can't beat em', join em.
An atheistic sign is included in the state Capitol's holiday display that includes a holiday tree and a Christian nativity scene. The sign, a new addition this year, is sponsored by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The sign reads, "Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds."
Annie Laurie Gaylor, foundation co-president, said in a prepared statement that the sign is a reminder of the "real reason for the season, the winter solstice." The solstice, on Dec. 21 this year, is the shortest day of the year.
Exactly! I'm sure most Americans agree that the real reason for the season is to celebrate the shortest day of the year! I know that is why my parents and family exchange gifts and read from the nativity story every year. Perhaps the Freedom from Religion Foundation thought they would evoke controversy from this and cries from the Christian majority so they could turn around and call them hypocrites. Not going to happen. Most Christians actually support free speech, unlike the Freedom from Religion Foundation. I especially encourage speech from self righteous, condescending atheists that further hurt their cause.

It makes a lot more sense to celebrate the days starting to get longer than that whole virgin birth myth.
BTW,
Some friends of mine got married on the winter solstice because it was the longest night of the year.

Who cares if atheists celebrate the days getting longer? That is not what the atheistic displays say. Instead, they are an attack on the beliefs of others. (Just as your chimp avatar is not a scientific statement--it is a slap at Christians!) The tactic reminds me of the tactics of Westboro Baptist Church in picketing the funerals of our soldiers because they oppose the government's position on homosexual rights. In fact, bmd, from now on, when I think of the atheist displays, I will think of you as the Pastor Phelps of atheism. In fact that is what I will call you from now on, Pastor Phelps.

Perhaps he could also protest the 10 commandments. Not the displays, mind you, but the honoring of your parents, the prohibition on murder and theft, that sort of thing.
How anyone can look at the legacy of 20th century communism and then say that RELIGION is the cause of evil is beyond me.

When I, a Frenchman, was married to the lovely and gracious Agent 99--it did not matter how long the days and nights were. We made love for weeks. Are all atheists wimps?

That's what the original celebration was all about. It must have been pretty scary for the ancients to see the days get shorter and shorter. Once the days started getting longer, a celebration was in order (even if warm whether was still several months away). Of course, early thumpers probably saw their opportunity and took credit for "saving" everyone from the days getting even shorter and shorter.
Keli wrote:That is not what the atheistic displays say. Instead, they are an attack on the beliefs of others.
Here's an idea: Don't insist on using public property and public funds to spread your B.S., and atheists won't insist on pointing out that it IS B.S.
Keli wrote:(Just as your chimp avatar is not a scientific statement--it is a slap at Christians!)
I've yet to see a serious refutation of the point it makes. Are you telling me that Jesus wasn't a man?

Phelps is one of your fellow thumpers. He's neither an atheist, nor a scientist. But, he is (gasp!!!) a Baptist!

Billy Graham? Yes, I am proud of him. It is sniveling creeps like you and your mentor Fred Phelps that bother me.

It doesn't matter what they celebrated thousands of years ago dick. Today, Christians around the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
If you don't believe in THAT birth, why are you celebrating THAT holiday?

There ya' go, being courteous again (and showing your penis-envy). How about trying again, without the name-calling? Or is that possible?
Re: Now Atheists Want to Join In Christmas Displays
You didn't answer the question BOB.
If you don't believe in the birth of Jesus Christ that is celebrated by 75% of Americans who are Christians and joined by millions of Christians around the world, why would you celebrate Christmas?
Now be a good boy and answer the courteous man's questions BOB!!!

Who's BOB? Another imaginary friend of yours? Or just another voice in your head?

When you come across this BOB person, perhaps you should ask her/him. Unless, of course, he/she goes the way of all imaginary friends as one grows up. Oops, forgot! There's little chance of that with you. Isn't there?
Now. If you wish to ask me a question, then go ahead and ask. But, unless you address your question to me, specifically, I must demur.
Re: Now Atheists Want to Join In Christmas Displays
You "demur" quite often BOB. And when you're not demuring, you outright refuse to answer.
We've come to expect it from you. That is part of what makes you the hypocrite you are.
That's why I'm not suprised you celebrate the birthday of our Lord and Savior when you don't believe in it

Aaron, ...... pleeeeeezzzzeeee ... give it up.
The initials "bmd" does not represent a person's name.
The poster of said "bmd" originally posted under the screen name of "BioMecDude".
The "Bio" refers to Biology, ...... but I don't remember or I never figured out what the "Mec" meant. The "Dude" part is self-explanitory.
"bmd" is a Biology Professor ..... and that is why he really "struts his stuff" when that subject is mentioned or discussed.
Aaron, course now I disagree with some of his "strutting" because in those cases he is only mimicking unproven accusations. It is the PC thingy for him to do, ya know. Anything otherwise may prove quite dangerous to his extended tenure ...... and he would be out on his arse looking for another job. He will probably deny that ..... but I know better.
Higher Education has strict "peer rules" that one must follow or their ass is grass.

We don't. And I don't have to be a male, nor a Caucasian, nor a human nor a "Christian" to celebrate Christmas. I learned to celebrate Christmas and New Years day and Thanksgiving and a few other holidays because I didn't have to go to school on those days. Like snow days, they were a time of celebration- and for the same reason.
And I'll betcha that most of those 75 percent, whether Christians or Pagans or Mugwamps, started celebrating Christmas for the same reason- that it was a non-school day.
Now the 4th of July wasn't near as much fun as those other hoilidays- because we didn't have to go to school in the summertime anyway.

Sam,
You greatly underestimate the freedom one has under college/university tenure. The only thing the Dean of my school would do if she read each and every post I have submitted here is shake her head, roll her eyes, and wonder why I bothered wasting my time with such silliness (just like her predecessor did when he caught my students and I brewing beer in my lab late one night; it only took a six-pack of porter to buy his silence).
Oh, and "bmd" stands for BioMechDude. My research is in comparative biomechanics, ecology, and evolution of marine invertebrates (beer brewing, sailing, and being a pain in the ass to creationists are just hobbies).
