Well according to senior military leaders, Obama is inheriting a total mess in Afghanistan.
They say it could require 30,000 American troops to clear it up.
Hopefully they will be going after al Qaeda terrorists from now on.

Strength
Soviet forces: 115,000
Afghan forces: 90,000-100,000 (in 1984)
Soviet war in Afghanistan
The Soviet War in Afghanistan (also known as the Soviet-Afghan War or the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan) was a nine-year conflict involving Soviet Union forces supporting the Marxist People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) government against the Islamist mujahideen resistance. The latter group found support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and other Muslim nations in the context of the Cold War. This conflict was concurrent to the 1979 Iranian Revolution and the Iran–Iraq War.
Initially Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on August 7, 1978.[3][not in citation given] The final troop withdrawal began on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989. Due to the Soviets' inability to register victory in the war, both The New York Times and Time have referred to the conflict in Afghanistan as the Soviet equivalent of the United States' Vietnam War.

9 years, 15,000 dead and they lost.
You have that fantasy that 30,000 troops will get it done.

No I dont think we can or should occupy Afghanistan.
That is why I said I hope they will be going after al Qaeda.
i.e. bin Laden.

And do you think the Taliban is going to set back and allow us free rein to go after OBL?

No.
It won't be easy.
But I dont think we should sit back and let bin Laden taunt us after he plotted the murder of thousands of innocent people,
I would hope and expect that you do not either.

We currently have in custody the mastermind behined. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is currently in Gitmo and has confessed to a laundry list of crimes and has even requested to plead guilty instead of having a trial and expressed desire to be excuted.
You shouldn't have any trouble remembering him. He's one of the individuals who was subjected to waterboarding that riled the left so much.
And no, I don't think we should commit thousands of troops to go after OBL. It will lead to an occupation of Afghanistan and a war we cannot win and likely will lead to conflice with Pakistan and will rival Vietnam more then Iraq.
And when it's all said and done, we will still not capture OBL. And frankly, he's not worth the cost.
