There are people who plan on keeping their children home from school that day.
Can you imagine if Bush had tried such a thing?

It is pretty pathetic when a politician uses children as a stage prop.

That is how they start training their "suicide bombers".
And don't forget, it worked for Hitler also.

I haven't a clue what 'Prezbro' will say. I can only imagine. It is one thing if he says stay in school, apply yourself, get a good education because the only thing that will limit you is how far you want to go. It is quite another if he uses kids as props to support his Marxist, intrusive government agenda. We'll see.
I got to thinking about this as I typed. It is really a sad commentary on the state of this nation when you worry about what the President of this nation will say to the students.

The hypocrisy charge was my first inclination as well--there is a consistent double-standard on the part of the Democrats. It is not OK when Bush mentions God, it is fine when Obama does. It was not OK when Bush spoke to students, it is OK when Obama does. It is not OK for pastors to advocate for traditional marriage and the right to life for the preborn, it is OK for pastors to advocate socialized medicine.
Given all of that, however, the Dems hypocrisy does not mean that Obama is wrong to address the nation's students. Like Cato, I think it is a matter of what the President says. If it is the socialist claptrap that I expect, then the speech will be a menace; however, it is not necessarily the case that he will use the occasion to spread propaganda. For the time being I am content to hear him out.

It is pretty pathetic when a politician uses children as a stage prop.
Especially their own (Palin, I'm lookin' right at you).
Wasn't Bush reading to a school group when he got the 9/11 news?
Politicians have been kissing babies since Athens became a democracy.

Hi Terry,
There is a world of difference between reading to elementary school students, and telling them to write about how they can help the President.
I actually find the similarities between Obama and some of history's most infamous despots quite chilling.

We are criticizing a speech we haven't even heard yet...
With actually valid things to go after Obama over, I can't believe you all are getting worked up over this.
I remember some VERY political speeches of Reagan's that were aimed at schoolkids.
The hoopla over the "How can I help the President?" question on the student handout is ridiculous, too. Did people make a hissy over "Ask not what your country can do for you... ?

And as I said it is pretty patheitc when politicians use kids as a political prop. I don't care what party they happen to hail from.

Why is speaking to kids a political prop, yet speaking to adults is not.
Are the kids not US citizens? Should politicians only speak to citizens that can vote?
Please. This is a non-issue.

Re: Der Obama to address all school students, September 8
We will never know what we have been discussing. It is likely after all the attention this has received Obama is revising his plans.
Kennedy implored us to ask what we can do for our country. Obama wanted school children to answer the question what can they do for him.
I've never been a fan of the late JFK, but that speech had the mark of genius. Obama's writing prompts are self-serving propaganda.

Donnie said the same thing TC, that it's a non-issue, no big deal. He's just talking to school kids. My response was that if it's no big deal and Obama had to know what kind of controversy it would cause, why even plan it in the first place? Perhaps someone else can answer that.

Well Steph try as they might the rightwihg pontificators can't p0rtray Obama to the left of mainstream Dems and Independents on these health care issues.
Just compare his position to that of Mitt Romney.
What it amounts to is using the stick on those who have no Insurance and using a stick on those who are doing just fine.

Did he know what kind of controversy it would cause?
Since Reagan and Bush I&II and Carter and Clinton all did addresses to schoolkids in some form or another without much hubbub, why would he have reason to think it would be controversial?
This is much ado about nothing.

The irony in this, I believe, is that a large portion of the people that are against this "indoctrination" of students in public school would have no problem with the Ten Commandments and organized prayer in every classroom.
Indoctrination, indeed.

Re: Der Obama to address all school students, September 8
You're talking to the wrong person, Terry. You know I don't believe teachers or administrators should lead children in prayer in our public schools.
Why can't you just acknowledge the fundamental difference between Kennedy telling people to ask what they can do for their country and Obama telling school children to ask what they can do for him?

Re: Der Obama to address all school students, September 8
I said that I commended Obama for his re-written "How can you help the President"-speech.
However, Democrats complained in 1991 when then President George H. W. Bush broadcast a speech from a Northwest Washington junior high school.
In fact, the House Majority leader at the time, Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.), said "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president..." WaPo 10/3/91
I agree with Gephardt.
(The last time that anyone sought to demagogue socialism in the public schools was a wall paper hanger named Schicklgruber from Austria. )

Yes. Hitler was a true blue socialist. Also, Obama's speech was SO political. Also, Terry H. is a level-headed, non-reactionary type of person.
My head hurts...
