I haven't a clue what 'Prezbro' will say. I can only imagine. It is one thing if he says stay in school, apply yourself, get a good education because the only thing that will limit you is how far you want to go. It is quite another if he uses kids as props to support his Marxist, intrusive government agenda. We'll see.

I got to thinking about this as I typed. It is really a sad commentary on the state of this nation when you worry about what the President of this nation will say to the students.

The hypocrisy charge was my first inclination as well--there is a consistent double-standard on the part of the Democrats. It is not OK when Bush mentions God, it is fine when Obama does. It was not OK when Bush spoke to students, it is OK when Obama does. It is not OK for pastors to advocate for traditional marriage and the right to life for the preborn, it is OK for pastors to advocate socialized medicine.

Given all of that, however, the Dems hypocrisy does not mean that Obama is wrong to address the nation's students. Like Cato, I think it is a matter of what the President says. If it is the socialist claptrap that I expect, then the speech will be a menace; however, it is not necessarily the case that he will use the occasion to spread propaganda. For the time being I am content to hear him out.

There is a world of difference between reading to elementary school students, and telling them to write about how they can help the President.

I actually find the similarities between Obama and some of history's most infamous despots quite chilling.

We are criticizing a speech we haven't even heard yet...

With actually valid things to go after Obama over, I can't believe you all are getting worked up over this.

I remember some VERY political speeches of Reagan's that were aimed at schoolkids.

The hoopla over the "How can I help the President?" question on the student handout is ridiculous, too. Did people make a hissy over "Ask not what your country can do for you... ?

Why is speaking to kids a political prop, yet speaking to adults is not.

Kennedy implored us to ask what we can do for our country. Obama wanted school children to answer the question what can they do for him.

I've never been a fan of the late JFK, but that speech had the mark of genius. Obama's writing prompts are self-serving propaganda.

Since Reagan and Bush I&II and Carter and Clinton all did addresses to schoolkids in some form or another without much hubbub, why would he have reason to think it would be controversial?

The irony in this, I believe, is that a large portion of the people that are against this "indoctrination" of students in public school would have no problem with the Ten Commandments and organized prayer in every classroom.

Why can't you just acknowledge the fundamental difference between Kennedy telling people to ask what they can do for their country and Obama telling school children to ask what they can do for him?

However, Democrats complained in 1991 when then President George H. W. Bush broadcast a speech from a Northwest Washington junior high school.

In fact, the House Majority leader at the time, Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.), said "The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president..." WaPo 10/3/91
