What controversy? Haven't the last few Presidents done similar speeches?
And Boortz, that noted left-wing nutjob:

Yes.
The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks today at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue.

Why can't you just acknowledge the fundamental difference between Kennedy telling people to ask what they can do for their country and Obama telling school children to ask what they can do for him?
Because he didn't. That was a Department of Ed. handout likely identical to the one that accompanied the last speech that Bush II gave to schoolkids.
I don't expect you to take my word for it. A quick google should back me up, though.

So did Zerobama...
So, stop crying about it already. Did you even watch the speech?
Can't talk about your president without insulting him? Classy.

Terry,
The presentation Obama ultimately made was not the presentation originally planned. Obama wanted his speech to be followed up by a writing assignment where students answer the question, "What can I do to help President Obama".
I'm not making this up.
Glenn Beck didn't manufacture that.
Rush Limbaugh didn't pull that out of his incredible shrinking ass.
It is what the plan was. Public outcry resulted in Obama canceling that portion of the festivities.

When the President spoke to our school children, particularly the younger students, he specifically signaled them out. That's fine if all he is telling them to do is stay in school, study and get better grades. But when he starts telling them to take responsibility for social issues such as homelessness, poverty, and the environment, he is setting them to task with the President as the one whose standards they must meet. Like it or not, that is the beginning steps of indoctrination of a whole new generation who turns to the government for answers which is just one more step down the road to socialism.

Obama's speech writers probably didn't even have the speech finished when idiots like Beck and Rushbo started having their conniptions.
Also, did you bother to verify that the "how can you help..." question did, indeed come from a Department of Ed. handout?
You people are acting irrationally.

[sarcasm]Yes! Nobody should EVER say that we have ANY responsibility to our fellow citizens.
Poor old people - take away their socialist health care. That is all Medicare is, you know. Let them choose between rent, food and medicine.
F'ing socialist bleeding hearts...[/sarcasm]
How does the world look when everything is black and white?

Re: Der Obama to address all school students, September 8
His predecessor, Ronald Reagan, addressed students directly on at least two occasions -- once in a broadcast speech in 1988 and once in a session with high-school students at the White House in 1986. Both times, the Gipper seized the chance to promote his own policies, with particular attention to cutting taxes and his "vision of economic freedom." In fact, Reagan's remarks were entirely political, if not partisan. He did precisely what the right has wrongly attacked Obama for doing -- but that was a message that conservatives like to hear, so they didn't object to the "indoctrination" of students at the public's expense.

The irony of that is delicious, Terry. I don't think free speech should be a right lost by Presidents or preachers.
