Re: An Editorial you gotta read
I, for one, have no problem with charter schools.
I'd prefer to do it in the form of "If you send kids to private schools you don't pay local school taxes". Same for homeschooling, except some sort of fee might be in order for use of public facilities, like inter mural sports, for example.
Think about it, however, in terms of federal grants to these private schools. Once you take Caesar's salt...
Federal funds are like crack. Once they start coming, entities will do just about anything to keep them flowing.

I think vouchers would be more in line Terry. But if that happened, Charleston Catholic would become the largest school in Kanawha County, they would have to build a sister school in Putnam County and Huntington St. Joe would become the largest school in Cabell county and thousands of teachers would suddenly become unemployed.
That's why charter schools won't pass unless they gurantee public teachers access to the jobs as Judy Hale as already dictated.

Possibly. Where I came from, St. Mary's parish in ol' CNY, only members of the parish could put their kids in the associated school. I don't see the immediate mass exodus that you forecast.
Regardless. I'd think any private school would be afraid of federal funding, directly or indirectly. Sooner or later the attached strings become apparent.

I agree, as Ron Paul says, if you get in bed with government, expect the STD.

Within 15 driving miles of CC, there are at least 10 public high schools. If 10% were able to take their vouchers and apply them to a private school, that's not a mass exodus and Charleston Catholic is suddenly the largest high school in the region.

Aaron,
Private schools can expel dumbarses and the parents are by nature more involved in their kids' educations.
I am convinced that if the public schools could replicate these conditions, they would be better places to be.
