Michigan Woman Faces Civil Rights Complaint for Seeking a Christian Roommate

A civil rights complaint has been filed against a woman in Grand Rapids, Mich., who posted an advertisement at her church last July seeking a Christian roommate.

The ad "expresses an illegal preference for a Christian roommate, thus excluding people of other faiths,” according to the complaint filed by the Fair Housing Center of West Michigan.

"It's a violation to make, print or publish a discriminatory statement," Executive Director Nancy Haynes told Fox News. "There are no exemptions to that."

So I'm sure you would be OK with a landlord that advertises, "will not rent to Christians".

This is not a rental situation. The woman is not a landlord, she was looking for a roommate who shared her same values. If she owns the property, she WILL be a landlord. If she doesn't own the property, she has no right to say who the actual owner can and can't rent to.

The law is really no good. It still allows discrimination by, for instance, gay haters like Willy. Still, it is the law.

Doubt what you want, TRC. Many are guided by their prejudices... However, the quoted source states:

Where does it say that it was the ONLY place she advertised?

If it was only in her church, I doubt it would have come to the attention of the authorities.

That would be fine, TerryRC. There are thousands of places for me to live; it only becomes MY business if there are no other places for me to live. This is not the case; there are dozens of Jewish and Muslims intentional communities of which I may not participate.

There are even some liberal Christian communities that would likely encourage me to go elsewhere, such as Reba Place in Evanston, Illinois. Don't mind in the least--they are a fine group in which I simply don't fit. Again, my preferences do not trump their liberties.

Name one community in the US, public or private, that refuses to allow christians to live there.

Also, if it becomes legal for enough people refuse to rent to you based upon your religion, you may find there are not thousands of places to live. Right now christians are first among equals. Trends imply that might not be the case for much longer.

On Cailfornia Avenue, about the 6700 block, on the Northwest side of Chicago, sits a Jewish nursing home, which as kosher will not let you bring in non-kosher foods. Even if non-Jews can live there, they must act as Jews while they are there. I know this well as a Jewish friend was there for some time. I could visit him, to be sure, but no bacon cheeseburgers for the Sheik!

Of course, I was in THEIR nursing home, and was happy to abide by their rules, and then I went to Fluky's (alas, since closed) and righted the wrong!

So they have rules. I have lived in places where alcohol wasn't allowed.

I'm still waiting for examples of those jewish and muslim communities that ban christians from living there. I have been assured (by you) that they legally exist.
