Real ID Act protest on Friday!
Aaron thought this needed it's own thread so here it is!
Senator Barnes, Author of SB248 against West Virginia implementing 'The Real ID Act of 2005' has set up a meeting to show support for legislation against Real ID in West Virginia and to create public awareness about Real ID.
We hope to pack the halls of the state capitol building with as many opponents to Real ID as we can muster. Senator Barnes has said that some senators, and the Commissioner of the DMV are expected to attend and the Governor has been requested to attend,
but he has not yet confirmed. The press will also be made aware. Please attend if at all possible, numbers mean everything. Bring your family, your friends and your neighbors. Spread this far and wide. Tell your local press about it.
the rally will begin to gather at 1:30pm Friday, March 14th 2008 at the rotunda (under the dome) of the State Capitol. The meeting begins at 2:30 PM in the Governors conference Room. We need to be heard loud and clear.
Feel free to bring anti-Real ID signs, etc.
Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer in an interview about Real ID follows: Notice he said that there was not one discenting vote in the Montana legislature when they passed their bill into law against the Real ID. What is wrong with our legislature and Governor?

Re: Real ID Act protest on Friday!
So I'll ask you the same question I ask on the other thread. I listened to the distinguished former Presidential candidate saying 'liberties' were at stake but he failed to mention anything specifically, as did you when I quizzed you about specifics. So specifically, what liberties are we in danger of losing with a real ID? Considering I displayed how the federal government is constitutionally authorized to mandate uniform ID's via the interstate commerace clause surely you can come up with at least one specific liberty we risk losing with this law.
Can't you?
Can't you?

Aaron,
Yes, our right to privacy is certainly in peril. We are entitled to a certain amount of privacy and this severely threatens our privacy rights. The REAL ID Act creates a multitude of problems for individuals and states. It will not stop terrorists, it will hurt Americans.
Failure or inability to comply with the REAL ID Act will severely limit the ability of Americans to travel freely and make banking nearly impossible. These are real problems but I don't see you offering any solutions.

Be sure and click and read the link about the Choicepoint ID Theft Case. While you're there look around that website and read about the Alabama mess. Learn a bit about the costs states will incur in trying to comply.

This is the same tripe you posted last week. You claim it's an invasion of privacy but you don't show how, at all, in any way, shape or form. Information on a driver’s license is already held in data bases, both state and federal, and whether you want to believe it or not, the federal government has access to state data bases as it is.
You claim that it will restrict travel but you can't cite one instance where it will, other then entering a federal building or an airplane, which are both governed by the federal government so they have the constitutional right to dictate what can and can not be used for admittance.
You claim ID theft but the biggest component of ID theft is left off drivers license and that's a social security number. For the record, I saw nowhere in your scare page anything that said SSN would be used on national ID's.
The only valid argument you have is the cost to states and that can be offset as it was when the CDL program was implemented, which by the way is a valid argument and proof that a national ID works.
As for solutions, given that there are no problems created so I don't see how I could offer any solutions. I guess one recommendation would be to find you a cabin in the Montana or Idaho wilderness…
Cheers

Re: Real ID Act protest on Friday!
Aaron,
Are you asking me to post here all of that information? Are you that lazy you can't click a link?
If states are required to use SSN's as a method of verifying identity, and then required to store that information, that is the threat. How many different government agencies have reported lost or stolen laptops, hard drives etc with SSN's and more? Somehow you think with the REAL ID this will no longer be a concern?
You're thick.

I read the link. The federal government will not be storing any information that is not already stored. If you think otherwise, your naive.

Re: Real ID Act protest on Friday!
The states will be compelled to. In addition, all of this information will be stored together. You really are dense.

Of course the states will be compelled to store your drivers license information Stephanie considering they ALREADY do!!!
Really, you didn't know that.
And you're calling me dense.
I'll note that you've still NOT shown how this is an invasion of privacy and really, the name calling from you, it just shows how desperate you really are. I know you swallow everything Paul says hook line and sinker but if you can't answer one simple question, maybe you're in over your head.

Re: Real ID Act protest on Friday!
It works and the sky won't fall...
Really. Do a little research.
Really. Do a little research.
A commercial driver's license (CDL) is required in the United States to operate any type of vehicle with a gross weight of 26,001 lb (11,793 kg) or over including (but not limited to) tow trucks, tractor trailers and buses. [1]
The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 was signed into law on October 27, 1986. The main purpose for the Act was to improve highway safety by making sure truck drivers and drivers of tractor trailers and buses have passed a written and driving test to become qualified to drive Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs), and to remove drivers that are unsafe and unqualified from the highways. The Act continued to give states the right to issue CDLs, but the national government established minimum requirements that must be met when issuing a CDL.

Re: Real ID Act protest on Friday!
Aaron,
I can't make you see that which you choose to remain blind to. The federal government is planning on forcing states to gather more and more private information on citizens. They will be forced to copy and store these documents and provide access to all of this information to various agencies. In addition, the federal government currently plans on using private corporations to achieve some of their goals. This information will not be safe.
You're never going to examine this issue objectively. Your mind is closed on the matter. You don't care that this is being forced on the states who will have to pay to comply. It is another unfunded federal mandate. It violates the rights of the states.
I'm not alone in my interpretation. I'm not even in a minority. I am, however, done discussing it with you.

Of course your done. Without providing even one specific case of where it is a violation of privacy. NONE!!!
As for the government storing information, appearantly you're the dense one here sister. They already know EVERYTHING there is to know about you. EVERYTHING. And it's already stored in one manner or another. If you think different, dense isn't the word for you...
