Khan wanted to perform the Hajj,
The federal government sued a suburban Chicago school district Monday for denying a Muslim middle school teacher unpaid leave to make a pilgrimage to Mecca that is a central part of her religion.
In a civil rights case, the department said the school district in Berkeley, Ill., denied the request of Safoorah Khan on grounds that her requested leave was unrelated to her professional duties and was not set forth in the contract between the school district and the teachers union. In doing so the school district violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by failing to reasonably accommodate her religious practices, the government said.

Re: Khan wanted to perform the Hajj,
I went to the middle school in question, Douglas MacArthur, although when I attended the mascot was the Redmen rather than the Generals. I had figured they had changed that.
I actually agree that the school should have granted her the unpaid leave; heck, they might even have saved a couple of bucks with subs as her leave would have been unpaid. I disagree, however, in the strongest terms, with the government's intrusion into the matter.

Wonder why they won't reasonably accommodate the religious practice of fundies for prayer/Bible Study; or, for school counselors or school nurses to not recommend abortion for pregnant teens?

Re: Khan wanted to perform the Hajj,
Keli,
I agree wholeheartedly. Christians should be given whatever room we wish for Bible studies and school counselors and nurses should absolutely not be censored in our Christian beliefs. That is what tolerance truly is.
Of course, liberal "tolerance" means Muslims get to go to Mecca and Christians get to go to the corner, but that's beside the point.

I wonder why you would say that. We had one in my school.
We catholics were also were released to go communion and confirmation "training".
Show me one instance where a school denied an extra-curricular christian group a charter.

Re: Khan wanted to perform the Hajj,
Way back in the stone age (early 1970's) I had CCD in my public school at the end of the day.

Why didn't the teacher take an extra-curricular trip at an extra-curricular time?
