Re: Obama-wahabiism: Wright or Rong?
TerryRC,
I wholeheartedly agree that hate speech should not be illegal. Don't we have bigger problems? Aren't we adult enough to ignore the stupidity of others?
I grow weary of the trend to bring the law into the situation whenever we have problems with someone's politics or ideology. It's enough to condemn them personally without insisting that "big brother" comes to your defense. It's not a good precedent to set--I wonder if the Republican impeachment of Clinton is to blame for this particular ball rolling as far along as it has.

I do disagree though, when it comes to different standards for whites and blacks in the churches. There is mass condemnation from the left whenever a conservative (generally white but not always) preacher speaks out against democratic policies, but whenever an inner city African American preacher speaks in favor of democratic policies, it's ok. One sees a condemnation of "mixing religion and politics" from the same group that lamely claps on 2 and 4 at James Meeks' House of Hope in the Chicago, while hearing a sermon on education spending and the inadequacies of the Republican administration.

I don't see it that way, Sheik.
Statements like those that come from people like Falwell or Phelps are religious and political. The media didn't play them up any more than they are hammering on Wright.

The media have just found Wright, however. He's been making political hay from the pulpit for years and just now the nation is hearing about it, whereas we've known of the Chistian right (and by that title) for 20 years or so.
You are right, however, that since the Wright quotes have come out, they've received proportionate attention. I guess I am critical in that it has taken this long for them to have come out.
