Superfund groundwater cleanup to use solar power
Feb. 24 -- Solar power, for the first time ever, is providing energy for a Superfund groundwater cleanup project.
An electrical resistance heating system at the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund site in Davis, Calif., was partially financed through federal stimulus money and will cut the projected cleanup time from 150 to 30 years at the site, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
"Our goal should be to clean the environment in the greenest way possible -- and this new treatment plant sets the benchmark for future actions," said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest.
