Sherman would be disappointed...
As federal grand jury wraps up its investigation into whether John Edwards broke the law in trying to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter, we now know at least part of the evidence prosecutors are looking at.
Raleigh's WDTV obtained several voicemails that Edwards apparently left for his former top aide Andrew Young, who at the time was pretending to be the father of Hunter's baby with Edwards.
Many of the messages date back to late 2007, when Edwards was still running for president. Hunter, at the time, was staying with Young and his wife, as they actively tried to conceal Hunter's affair with Edwards and her subsequent pregnancy.
"I'm just checking in with you and making sure you're safe and in a place where you are good," Edwards says in a recording from December 27, 2007.
Young reportedly gave ABC News the voicemails last year in an attempt to back up his story that Edwards was involved in trying to cover up his affair with Hunter. They have since been handed over to federal prosecutors.
For almost two years, a North Carolina grand jury has been investigating whether Edwards broke campaign finance laws in trying to hide his liaison with Hunter, who briefly worked as a videographer for his campaign.
The trove of messages also includes voicemails from Fred Baron, a Texas trial lawyer and major Edwards benefactor who allegedly paid for Young and Hunter to disappear while Edwards was running for president. The messages include one left in July 2008, after Edwards was caught by a National Enquirer reporter sneaking into a Los Angeles hotel to see Hunter and their daughter, Frances Quinn.
"Hey Andrew, it's Fred. I just had long conversation with Edwards and this has just, you know, it's been awful. But we're gonna get through it, and I just wanted to tell you how positive I feel like we are gonna get through this thing," Baron said in the message.
Young has said the message--as well as other dealings with Baron, who died in October 2008--is evidence that Edwards actively participated in the cover-up. The former Democratic presidential candidate has denied any wrongdoing.

I suppose he would, Aaron, but Sherman (much like my mom) was a true believer. The amount of loyalty the man had to his ideology was quite something.

That is, Aaron, Sherm as a man was above reproof. Would to God that our nation's leaders were. I increasingly believe that men and women of integrity are as sorely needed as those of right ideology.

Re: Sherman would be disappointed...
It is truly said that the difference between statement and politicians and statesmen is that statesmen are concerned about the next generation, politicians are concerned only about the next election. It is truly sad that we have nothing but politicans in office and nothing but politicians on the horizon.

I don't think his loyality would have extended this far Mike.
