Lang, Sears to return to teaching

MORGANTOWN -- Two academic officers who resigned in a scandal over a master's degree that West Virginia University wrongly awarded to the governor's daughter are moving down, but not out.

Provost Gerald Lang and business school Dean R. Stephen Sears resigned within days of a report last week condemning their decision to alter a transcript and retroactively grant a degree to Mylan Inc. executive Heather Bresch.

Lang and Sears have the option of returning to teaching, and WVU spokeswoman Amy Neil said Tuesday that both have indicated they will do so after leaving their administrative posts June 30.

Lang will earn about $199,627 as a professor, or 82 percent of his 2007 salary of $243,448.

Sears will earn $159,862, down from his current salary of $200,000. His contract specifies a pay rate of $145,000 "plus any increments added to it.''
