Flat Tax on Gas?
If government is getting a percentage of the pump price on gasoline, perhaps it is disinterested in lowering the price--since $4+/gallon gasoline prudces a windfall in revenue? If there is going to be a tax, State and federal tax should be set at flat tax rate based on the average price of gas for the last five years... Oui?

I could be wrong, but I thought that state and federal gasoline taxes were a flat rate per gallon.

Hi Armon how are you? Where are you from? Are you really from France? Just thought that I would make a little small talk. Strike up a conversation.

Ms. Redtail,
Are any of us really from anywhere? Does a Frenchman have to be from France? Linda, let me just say that I am glad that you are here. Linda, you are a breath of fresh air in this cauldron of howitosis we call "Gazz friends." Stay as sweet and nice as you are and you will go far. (Also, don't believe anything that Ziggy says.)

Hi Armon. I enjoyed your post. My grandfather's name was Armand and he came to the U.S. from Quebec Province which is also where the Cree come from and he is the one who married an Amerindian (Canadian Native American) So he was French and spoke French. (Canuck he called himself)

Linda,
I am not really French and my name is not really Armon. I am Polynesian and live in Zarr Chasm, West Virginia--between Flotsam and Belch on the Cheat River. I use the pseudonym and personna, Armon, because of the persecution I have suffered as a Racially Misassigned American (RMA). Unfortunately, people here see through my thinly veiled disguise.

I am sorry that you suffer persecution. My grandparents and my mother and her siblings did for quite a while. My generation has done much better. Even up here in Liberal America things have not always been good for people who are racially mixed and still aren't sometimes.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
For the most part gas taxes are a flat rate per gallon.
However WV has (or did have) an additional 5% tax which I think was based on the wholesale price in November.
My wife reminds me that my memory is getting better as I get older and sometimes I can now remember even things that never happened.
So take it for what it's worth I did not look it up.
It is just what I think I remember.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
So WV has an additional tax on gas. I think most of the Northeastern states do too. It is hard to know as it is all contained in the price. In some places up here it is approaching $4.00 per gallon.

Well our drivers are no longer allowed to fuel in the Northeast.
And we have never been able to fuel in WV. (at least since I been there).
More and more small independents are parking their trucks every week.
Hillary's fuel tax summer holiday would be a big help. (about $20 per day)

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
So Hillary's tax idea would be helpful then. It didn't seem that it would be. There has to be though a longer term solution to this problem. What it is I don't pretend to know.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
It would be a "duct tape" semi solution to help keep drivers going short term.
Maybe they could make it a little longer till Bush is out even.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
Maybe Obama should rethink it then. Is that for the big truckers 20 dollars a week? Or smaller trucks? I also do not think that Bush would ever do anything that would upset the oil (or gas) industry. He and his family have too much invested in that particular venue. Almost all politicians have ties but his family is particularly tied all the way to friendships with the Saudi Royal Family. As long as he is in office I don't believe that viable solutions are forthcoming.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
The typical truck (semi otr) will run 5-600 miles per day and get from 5 to 6 mpg.
About 100 gal. per day.
Tax on diesel is a little higher than gas. 24 cents as I recall. So it translates to 20-25 $ per day.
Day in and day out it adds up.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
Wow 5-6 miles per gallon. That is just terrible. I wonder sometimes though I have never seen anything about it if collusion exists in any way between oil companies and vehicle manufacturers. I have no proof but I have always considered it. Is this a case of one hand washing the other somehow. Fuel efficiency should be a very important goal for every manufacturer.

Re: Flat Tax on Gas?
Well Lindaredtail when comparing mpg please remember when loaded you are talking about 80,000 pounds.
That is as much as 20 big fullsize passenger cars.
So looking at it like that the big rig is more efficient than a car.
But your point is valid.
With the miles they run even an increase of one mpg makes a big difference bottom line.
