Church to Burn Copies of Koran to Mark 9/11

By staff writers

August 04, 2010 "News.com.au" -- A FLORIDA church was yesterday promoting an event where it will burn copies of the Koran to mark the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the U.S.

In the announcement on its Facebook page, The Dove World Outreach Center of Gainesville, Florida, asked other religious groups to join in standing "against the evil of Islam. Islam is of the devil!"

The Facebook event has received more than 1,500 "Like" recommendations by users, but had also been attacked with a number of threatening messages posted on the page and corresponding anti-Islam rants.

The church's pastor, Terry Jones - who has written a book titled "Islam is of The Devil" and sells T-shirts bearing the same message - defended the controversial event.

"Islam and Sharia law was responsible for 9/11," Jones told Agence France-Presse.

"We will burn Korans because we think it's time for Christians, for churches, for politicians to stand up and say no; Islam and Sharia law is not welcome in the U.S.

I wonder from where, exactly, they will get these Korans. It's a church I've never heard of and I doubt very much I will hear of them again. If they own the books they have the right to burn them. I cannot imagine anyone actually trusting in Jesus Chrst as their Savior (a quite necessary thing) due to a book burning, but I should like to be wrong.

I don't think this will go anywhere or do any good, but in this free country, the church has the right to do as they are doing.

Although I see this as an affront to Islam, I believe that there are those who burn the Bible and the US flag under the protection of the First Amendment. WWJD? I don't think that He would burn any of the three.

Keli,

I do not know what Jesus would do with a Koran, but obviously He is Lord of all and the Koran misses this. Jesus died for the very ones who crucified Him.

However, He tells the woman caught in adultery "go and sin no more" and to others, "No one comes to the Father but by me." It is obvious that neither sin nor unbelief was something that Jesus cared for in the least. There were times when he beat the moneychangers and called the Pharisees a "brood of vipers" as well.

I would suspect that he would honor it as it is a book with many of the same moral codes and concepts that Jesus taught and is written with a love and reverence for HIS father. Additionally, as the Bible teaches us, Islam is a religion originating from the same father, Abraham, as Christianity does. And it makes more reference to his earthly mother, Mary then the Bible does.

I greatly disagree. While some of the same moral standards are undoubtedly present, the essence of Christianity is man's need of Jesus Christ because of our seperation from God caused by sin. One does not find that sort of thing in the Koran.

I have a question for you Mike. I haven't studied the bible in quite some time and my memory fails me and I'm wondering if you can help me out. There is, I believe in the old testament, a parable of God reserving righteous Jewish individuals when it is believed that none remain. I realize that is a brief description but hopefully you can direct me to that parable and then we shall have a conversation to which I am stating right now, Ziggy is not invited.

May I suggest this as the passage you seek?

I Kings 19:11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah? 14And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

15And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria: 16And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room. 17And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay. 18Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.
