Ziggy's "political compass":
Economic Left/Right: -3.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.41
This is near the center of the Left Libertarian quadrant- near Ghandi, Nelson Mandela and The Dalai Lama- a good place to be.

Why hasn't our racially misassigned friend fessed up.
I'd wonder if Ziggy & Terry weren't the same person if I hadn't met them both.
I also find it a bit odd that Aaron and I scored closer to one another than Jim & I did. Strangest of all is I scored much closer to center than I would have thought.

You know where he stands. All this would do is confirm it.

As both favor big government and, imho, detest religion, perhaps one is the father and the other is the son.

I don't. Jim I think is a classical Republican in that he favors small government, free enterprise and unless I'm mistaken, has a very strong faith that he keeps close to the vest. You and I on the other hand are closer to Libertarians in that we see some roles for our government and we agree more on social issues.
Were it not for the one topic, I'm quite sure you and I would have likely scored closer then we did. We seldom argue because we agree on so much. Part of that is that I've changed some of my views and part of it is that you think I'm so damn wonderful you can't bring yourself to feel anything ill towards me.

I favor civil liberties. As history shows, it takes a strong government to defend them. Most people aren't going to roll over and give other groups equal rights out of the kindness of their hearts
As far as speculating goes, perhaps you are Hitler's love child.

Economic Left/Right: -4.00 This means that I believe in some social spending to promote the well being of the country. You must, also, as you have benefited from it from time to time. I also believe that unfettered capitalism can lead to disaster.
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.44 This means I am ANTI-AUTHORITARIAN (a negative number, you see).
Perhaps you favor bigger government as you have a higher Social Libertarian/Authoritarian index than I do, meaning you are more Authoritarian, something requiring more government "muscle".

Really. So where are these countries that have defended civil liberties and at what point in history did they exist? Citations please.

Possibly if he didn't kill himself along with Eva Braun and instead escaped and lived until Februrary 1965, give or take a week.
Of course if the implication is that I'm a socialist, I might suggest you look into a mirror.

Really? How so?

Perhaps the reason my score was what it was is because there was no "neither agree or disagree" answer thus I agreed because I do favor some government oversight.
The problem is that more times then not, by about a 99 to 1 ratio, the government has failed miserably in their duty and in most cases are as complicit as those they are supposed to be overseeing.
Take UBB for example. While I fault Massey for their poor safety record, had MSHA not failed so miserably so many times, including on the days leading up to the explosion, those 29 men would still be alive. IMHO, as MSHA has oversight and failed as miserably as they did, it is that organization that bears the brunt of the responsibility of those deaths.
Yet they will not be sued, no one will face any criminal charges and no one will lose their job because in addition to oversight, MSHA also has responsibility investigating the explosion and everyone knows what they're findings are going to be. And if they don't, all they have to do is read the Coal blog in the Gazette as that is where MSHA is conducting their investigation.
That's like the fox wiping the blood off his mouth and blaming the dead chickens on the roosters. Pathetic.

First of all the repsonsibility of defending one's right falls to the individual. Secondly, strong government is a certain way to loose one liberties. If you look at what the founders created, it was anything but a strong central government.
By the way I know people who favor civil liberties and you sir are not one of those people.

That's it! The Sheik is the centrist among us! I'm not the least bit surprised
Re: Where are you on the 'Political Compass?"
I favor decriminalization of marijuana and oppose 'free' trade, so I reckon that's what gets me to appear more centrist on the scale than I really am. Of course such tests are always meant to be as entertaining as they are enlightening. I will likely be voting for the Libertarian for Senate and the Republican for Governor here in Illinois, which means the Republican will win in the Senate (a ridiculous character named Mark Kirk better suited for a day of yachting than governing) and the Democrat will win for Governor (despite his best efforts).

Its always a good thing to have a few people around that are not dependent upon some stranger to tell them who they should be, what they should believe or how they should think.
A few good people might be able to prevent the others from being in a crowd, on their knees, praying 6 times each day.
