Ice-Age Mammoth Bones Found in California

A worker clearing land for farming has uncovered the bones of a juvenile Ice Age mammoth that archeologists are calling the first-ever find of its kind in Monterey County.

State Department of Parks archaeologist Mark Hylkema is calling for a careful excavation of the site near Castroville to search for evidence that the mammoth was brought down by Ice Age hunters.

The bones belong to a Columbian mammoth, an extinct species of elephant with enormous curled tusks that died out about 10,000 years ago.

That per say “die off” about 10,000 years ago coincides exactly with the maximum height of the Post Glacial Sea Level rise of the Holocene Interglacial Period.

The glacial ice actually started to melt about 21,000 years BP (see graphs below) ….. but then Global Temperatures increased dramatically at 15,000 BP and the ice melting did likewise (Meltwater Pulse A), …… thus, total sea level rise was 135 meters (443 feet) by 8,000 BP.

And when the sea levels rose 443 feet ..... to their present level, ........ it eliminated tens of millions of acres of pasture for the Columbian mammoths to be feeding on.

So my guess is, ....... starvation played a role in the extinction of the Columbian mammoths.



One can readily see that the increases in Holocene Temperature proxies agree exactly with the increases in Post Glacial Sea Level Rise proxies.
