Grisly new warning pictures placed on pack of cigarettes
I'll bet the same people that promote these pictures oppose those picketing abortion clinics using pictures of aborted babies.

Likely so. The priorities are ten shades of mixed up.
I really, really don't care if someone wants to smoke, and yet the government does. Yet, I really, really care if someone wants to kill their unborn child, and the government does not. Am I insane?

What about blind people? Don't they care--really care--about blind smokers? Braille pictures?

Mandatory speech is hazardous to freedom
The FDA's foray into advertising reveals a view of Americans not as free people — free even to make bad choices — but as people elites should control.
It is a view of government not as servant, but as master.
That's hazardous to liberty, clearly.

That there, Sam, is a question tough enough to make me want a cigarette!

Re: Grisly new warning pictures placed on pack of cigarettes
Really, our government is playing a fool's game with cigs. So many state budgets are dependent upon cigarettes, either through money generated by the tobacco farmers or from the tax revenues. Cigarettes are not going to be illegal ever, so the matter becomes to what extent does government make itself feel better and more empowered through heavy taxation and graphic warning labels.
Perhaps McDonald's cheeseburgers should have a photo of someone who is morbidly obese. Jack Daniels should have a crashed car with graphic images of bloody people mangled in a car wreck. Easychairs should have warning labels with a photo of that fat guy who had to be removed from his house through a window. If we are going to tell people that they are not their own (vis a vis the government), then we might as well go the whole way.

Why not superimpose photos of auto accident victims on beer bottles? Condoms passed out to children at their schools could be adorned with close ups of the various symptoms of STDs. Abortion clinics could have wall photographic murals of the dismembered fetus. Homosexual bath house passes could be decorated with various photos of AIDS victims in the last sickly throes of life. And, Twinkies could have pictures of Rosie O'Donnell or Michael Moore.
