ST. ALBANS, W.Va. - A St. Albans police officer wrecked his cruiser while driving to work from Cabell County on Monday.
Patrolman N.K. Elkins was heading to St. Albans from his home near Ona on U.S. 60 about 6:10 a.m. Monday when he hit a patch of ice and lost control of the cruiser near Cabell-Midland High School, according to St. Albans Police Chief Joe Crawford.
The cruiser came to rest against a tree beside the road, saving Elkins from plunging into a ravine, Crawford said.
Elkins was not hurt in the wreck, but the car was badly damaged. Crawford does not yet know if the cruiser can be repaired.
Each of St. Albans' 21 police officers has an assigned cruiser to drive.
