Traffic snarled and children frolicked as five inches of snow fell in Livingston Parish Thursday, authorities said.
While children made snowballs and snowmen, during an unscheduled day off from school, motorists found getting across the Amite River bridges a problem until midmorning, Police Chief Jeff Wesley said.
“We had major problems with the bridges on (U.S.) 190 and I-12,” Wesley said
Meteorologist Danielle Manning with the National Weather Service in Slidell estimated that 3 inches of snow fell in East Baton Rouge Parish, 2 inches in West Baton Rouge Parish and 5 in Livingston Parish.
A reporter in Tangipahoa Parish, where heavy power outages were reported, measured 4 inches of snow in her driveway.
Westbound traffic lanes of the I-12 bridge over the Amite River had to be closed around 7:30 a.m. because of ice, said Wesley, who added that the closure caused a significant backup of traffic trying to get to Baton Rouge.
