That one fifth of West Virginians qualify for food stamps is scary

The government handed out its first food stamps on May 29, 1961, in McDowell County.

West Virginians have taken to food stamps like ducks to water.

As the Daily Mail's Zack Harold reported Monday, by fiscal year 2008, no fewer than 276,800 West Virginians were enrolled in the program. In 2009, 305,960 West Virginians received SNAP benefits. In 2010, 345,906 state residents were enrolled.

That's one in every five of us.
